Abstract

A fundamental element to achieving sustainable management of resources has been the responsible treatment of waste and its reuse, promoting the reduction of domestic and industrial waste generation. Due to these services' complexity, Chile municipalities have decided only to manage domestic waste. This results in industrial waste having to be managed by specialized companies.

From the logistical point of view, designated operators must be in charge of efficiently and safely managing transport between the entity that generates waste and its final disposal. This task has become increasingly complex due to rising fuel, labor, and machinery costs and increased demand.

This study develops an integer programming model for a periodic vehicle routing problem to minimize the operational and rescheduling costs of failed visits for a waste management company specializing in collecting hazardous or recyclable industrial waste. In this problem, weekly visits to each customer must be scheduled according to the requested frequency. We apply our approach in a case study based on a waste management company in the Metropolitan Region of Chile.
